The early 20th century was influenced by the Edwardian beauty ideals. Women wanted to look pale; a tanned skin meant that you had been working in the sunlight, even possibly in the fields! And fine ladies did not want to look like simple peasants. Now it's quite the opposite, we spend time and money to make it look like we have all the time in the world to be under the sun rays.

Foundation had not yet made its entry. Instead women used bright powder. The eyeshadow was light and often grey, brown or lemon coloured. It was applied very lightly on the lids, too much was considered for those working on a stage or ”the street” which in many people's eyes were the same thing.

Lip colour was used sparsely, to achieve a "bitten lip" look.
