20s Makeup – Makeup of the Century
Ah, the roaring 20s! This was an exciting time when women started to break free from the Victorian lifestyle. The glamorous "Flapper" was a heavily made up, sexually liberated woman who danced 'til the morning light in dresses that did not accentuate the waist. Corset no more!
Makeup was heavy and dark, and women drew inspiration from the fabulous actresses on the silver screen, such as Lillian Gish and Clara Bow. Hair was cut short into a stylish bob, and dresses were shorter - a big reason being fabric becoming rationed and more expensive during and after WWI.
Eyes were sooty black with kohl makeup. Eyebrows were heavily plucked and drawn downward towards the temple. Lips were smaller and formed into the ‘cupid’s bow’ shape.
Lashes were enhanced and rouge were applied in circles rather than angular.
