Taking a whole house approach, Paul Loboda has completely refurbished his 1930s house in Ealing taking it from a pebble dash finish to something altogether more modern and comfortable, inside and out.

He decided to insulate the outside with 100mm external wall insulation so as to achieve gains in comfort without losing any floor space. For the external wall render he chose a smooth grey. Around £12,000 was spent to insulate the exterior, including £1500 on scaffolding.

As part of installing external wall insulation he worked with the windows in two different ways. At the front he left the windows where they were. This means they now look nicely recessed and there was no disruption inside the room. To the rear he adjusted the window, moving it outwards to allow a window shelf for ornaments.

Recycling is a common theme throughout this retrofit.

For floor insulation, recycled plastic bottles (shredded and compacted into a form of insulation) were used. There’s 250mm of insulation under the floors of newer extension and 100mm in the original footprint of the house. Recycled newspaper was used for loft insulation.

Rubber recycled roof tiles have been used on the roof which, Paul says, was partly a precaution against local children who had been in the habit of throwing stones onto roofs in the street and breaking the tiles.

Water recycling is fitted on the outside, with 600 litre capacity in the form of two large tanks.

There are also some interesting experimental aspects to this retrofit.

Outside is a water permeable drive so the water can pass through without causing issues. Clay paint, free of chemicals, was used for decorating the house internally.

Sun tubes have been introduced to bring natural light into the interior, complemented by LED lighting with fittings drawing as little as 1 watt.

Solar thermal provides for all Paul’s hot water needs for 4 -5 months of the year. The system also diverts heat that is surplus to requirement to the underfloor slab.

A new energy efficient boiler and A rated appliances were also installed.
