The term “female driver” may stir up a variety of connotations, but when it comes to rally driving, women are joining the sport in increasing numbers, with some impressive results.
19-year-old Kirra Penny grew up on the rally circuit with her father, Jindabyne mechanic Andrew Penny. She began co-driving for her dad when she was 15, the youngest co-driver to compete at national level.
Hearing-impaired competitor Lynda Leigh has raced as both a driver and co-driver, and says rallying is the ultimate level playing field. “We all compete on the same roads in the same event, no matter what level you are at, novice to professional, any age or gender, and we can adapt our cars so we can compete.”
Bethany Cullen built and maintains her own rally car, and with co-driver Mel McMinn, competes “just on the edge of the front pack of cars”, challenging teams with much bigger budgets.
