GoPro: How to Spiny
Chris Korbulic and I were lucky enough to get an opportunity to play with a custom GoPro mount over winter break up in Mt. Shasta. The device has been dubbed the spiny mount and was developed by the media team over at GoPro. Many of the super smooth athlete pans that you see in the Hero 3 launch video were captured with this device.
WARNING: this custom mount is NOT for beginners in any sport! There is a learning curve with this mount and should only be used by those who are experienced and confident in their suited craft. **REMEMBER: This is a custom mount that will not be sold in production through GoPro but all the shots have the spinny in frame so you can get a good look.
The device itself is a 4 foot carbon rod with two GoPro's on either end counter balancing each other while spinning freely on a rollerblade wheel. The specific pieces used are listed below:
-GoPro Handle Bar Mount x2
-4ft Carbon Rod x1
-Roller Blade Wheel x1
-Size Appropriate Screws x4
-Hose Clamps x4
-Hose Insulation (for padding the clamps)
-Gorilla Tape (used to reinforce handle bar mounts)
-GoPro Hero 3 | 2 x2 (must be the same weight for counter balancing)
-Metal Support Bracket (used to mount the bar to the roller blade wheel)
-Plastic Cylindrical Base Plate (used to screw in roller blade wheel and GoPro mount to bottom)
I did not create this mount but felt very fortunate to test it out on my home rivers. I advise anyone that makes one to try it out on activities that you are very comfortable doing as the spinny takes some getting use to. BIG UPS to the GoPro Media squad for coming up with another innovative mount continuing to progress action sports POV cinematography.
