Sports Administration plans mock Tokyo Olympics so athletes can stay in the game
The Sports Administration will hold a sports tournament over the original dates of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The "mock Olympics" plan has met welcome from athletes who are unable to compete internationally, many of whom are disappointed by the postponement of the real games. The mocks will feature 12 of Taiwan''s favorite sports, including badminton, gymnastics and athletics. Officials are even cooking up special plans to try and make an interesting challenge for Tai Tzu-ying戴資穎, who, as world badminton No. 1, might otherwise find the local competition a bit underwhelming. Let''s take a look.
The World No. 1 stars in a photoshoot for a fashion brand. She''s normally on the court, not in the studio, but while games are suspended, she''s padded out her rigorous training schedule with some sponsorship work.
The Sports Administration and National Sports Training Center plan to hold a "Mock Tokyo Olympics" from Aug. 1 to 8. Tai will be there, along with Taiwan''s premier male badminton player, Chou Tien-chen. Tai will struggle to find competition among local players. Administrators are planning to have her play against male rivals, to up the difficulty a bit.
The mock is scheduled for the original dates of the Tokyo Olympics. Twelve sports will feature, including badminton, weightlifting, gymnastics, archery, and athletics. Because the competition will be so uneven among just local players, there''ll be a special judging system.

There may be special, higher requirements for the athletes who were planning to attend the real Tokyo Olympics. If they reach those standards then of course we''ll give them higher prizes, but I think the prizes may be cut down if they seem complacent, if they lose, or if they are penalized by judges for some reason.
For professionals who would have been in Tokyo, the mock games will of course provide no match for their full potential. But many are nonetheless delighted at the news. It will help them stay in the game while they wait for international sports to get back on track.
