Healing Power of Water I Kennedy Krieger Institute
Kennedy Krieger Institute pediatric patients, parents and staff members share their stories of recovery, perseverance and gratitude.
We're honored to share the inspiring stories of Liza, Luke, Marcel and their families. These remarkable individuals represent just a handful of the more than 24,000 patients and families from all over the U.S. and the world whom we serve each year. Our goal is to transform these individual's lives through compassionate, innovative patient care, treatment, education and community support.
Meet Liza, a 9-year old adaptive sports athlete from our Bennett Blazers sports team. Liza was born with spina bifida a birth defect that causes the spine to not form properly. Liza’s family were told by doctors not to expect certain things from Liza. Since joining the Bennett Blazers program at the age of 6, Liza has flourished in her abilities. Liza began her adaptive sports journey by participating in the swim program. While timid at first, Liza has gained self-confidence over the course of time and is now a completely independent swimmer and has also joined other Bennett Blazers sports teams including the basketball team. The adaptive sports community has truly transformed Liza and her family’s lives.
Meet Luke, a 16-year old student from our Lifeskills and Education for Students with Autism and Pervasive Behavioral Challenges (LEAP) Program. Luke arrived at Kennedy Krieger schools due to experience severe difficulties in a public school environment. As part of the curriculum at the LEAP Program, Luke is able to participate in an aquatic program which has helped to establish a good routine and decrease severe behaviors. LEAP is unique as they are one of the only special education programs that has an aquatic element to their curriculum. By teaching students like Luke how to swim, they are arming these students with a necessary life-skill should they find themselves in any sort of water danger.
Meet Marcel, a 2-year old spinal cord injury patient from Hawthorne, New Jersey. Marcel was born with Down syndrome who was diagnosed with transverse myelitis after becoming paralyzed from the waist down. Marcel receiving interdisciplinary care as an inpatient, who eventually transitioned to our outpatient therapy. Marcel has made incredible progress through the Institute’s activity based restorative therapy program and is now able to stand on his own and walk with assistance.
