Building my first mallets
How to build a wooden joiner's mallet. I made two, just to see what the size difference is like. I have been thinking of naming them The Rock and Kevin Hart.
This build draws from Rex Krueger's video "a much better mallet," the larger mallet pulls from Paul Sellers' advice on a "heavy hammer," and the build is a hybrid of techniques from watching lots of youtube and instagram videos.
Being my first mallets and doubting my hand skills, there are some shortcuts for ease of build, such as using the tablesaw for my mortise and gluing 2 pieces of wood together rather than making the mallet from a solid chunk of wood. Also, I avoided the double angle mortise in Rex's build, but I kept the curved head and the indexing corbel on the handle. One more thing, since I used the dubious tenon jig to create the shoulders, it was pretty easy to make a vertical notch for a spline. (The wood is maple left over from my end vise build. )
