If there’s one category in mountain biking that polarises opinion more than any other it’s ebikes.
It’s a complex debate that charged further because of issues with land access, trail sustainability and even the legislation governing the maximum speed of the bikes. In the end though, it really comes down to an age old problem… them vs us.
We’re all mountain bikers here, but on one side of the fence you have riders that think pedal assist mountain bikes are so evil that they won’t even look at one, let alone sling a leg over an ebike to see what all the fuss is about. They’re the guys and gals that call cheater to anyone riding an ebike, even though they aren’t riding with them, let alone competing against them.
Camped out on the other side of the fence are a growing number of riders that have fully embraced the new technology and the riding possibilities that pedal assist mountain bikes have opened up to both young and old riders alike. It’s the ride more trails in the same time or ride for longer brigade.
It’s a divide that shows no signs of uniting, but regardless of which side of the fence you’re on there’s one thing we can all agree on and that’s ebikes are a hotbed of technological development.
Progress is so rapid that in many ways it’s feels like the dawn of mountain biking once again. Geometry is all over the map, new bands like Bosch are entering the mix, and MTB household names like Fox, SRAM and Shimano are all scrambling to develop bespoke ebike components.
We also have new metrics with which to compare bikes, toque, power and battery life, not just travel, geometry and weight. It’s an amazing time to be testing bikes and this month we have four of the most exciting ebikes on the market.
We’ve got the Lapierre Overvolt with its mid-mounted battery that promises to improve handling by keeping the extra weight centred in the frame. Next up is the Shimano powered Merida eOne-Sixty where even the gears are power by electric. Rocky Mountain goes it alone with a unique design that offers instant power delivery, seamless integration and traditional trail bike geometry. Finally we have the new Trek Powerfly 9 LT Plus with the new Bosch E-MTB power mode that was only released last month.
So we have four fully charged ebikes all promising to light up every trail. It’s time to find out which one shines the brightest.
