3 and a half years ago, i was in my living room and i decided to record a cover of one of my favourite songs of all time. i pressed record and as soon as i got the take i new it was special. we posted a vid that night and i went to watch the football… a couple hours later i checked my phone. it was blowing up.

i kept refreshing my page over and over again and it just kept going up. it felt so good. so many people saying the cover took them back to their youth listening to the original like i used to, some were saying it felt like a brand new song to them and to a few it was genuinely a song they hadn’t heard before (this made me feel old).

the following year i posted it again and it blew up even more, but my life was kinda in a strange place. the band who originally wrote the song even commented on one of the videos saying I’d killed it. (I was hoping this was in a good way)

I took a break from releasing music a little while after this cos i lost my dad. my house got robbed also and my old laptop i recorded this on was stolen.

i came back at the start of this year with some new music. i announced a tour and stuff and was just getting settled back into the swing of things and a few weeks ago on a bit of a random one, i decided to post the cover again. this time it totally went insane. turned out so many of you had been patiently waiting for literal years for me to post it. the fray started interacting with my videos. they told me they preferred my version and then even pushed me to release it.

anyway last week i got in the studio, brought my $200 mic i recorded the original version on and made it happen. i thought I’d lost the original files when my laptop got stolen but found them on a hard drive.

it’s kinda crazy… some of the vocals here are the same from 2023, before my dad passed, before a lot of stuff happened, and the rest is now where things are so different, but for some reason it feels special.

i think this song itself has meant so much to me throughout my life and even when recording the original cover, it means something very different to now. that’s what makes music so special. a different voice, melody, a different mindset, any slight change can breath new life into something like this.
