“Do Not Call 9/11 a Terrorist Attack” - Leaked Email From Canada’s Broadcaster Sparks Backlash

CBC is facing backlash after an internal memo reportedly instructed reporters and editors not to refer to the September 11, 2001 attacks as “terrorist attacks.”

The CBC guidance instead describes the events as hijackings that led to plane crashes and the destruction of the World Trade Center. The memo was authored by CBC News senior director of journalistic standards

Basem Boshra and surfaced ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
CBC says the policy is based on longstanding editorial standards that reserve terms like “terrorist” and “terrorism” for attributed statements rather than using those labels in its own reporting. The policy has also drawn comparisons to CBC’s coverage of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel.
