DIY Estate Planning - A Different Perspective
Most estate lawyers advocate that consumers stay away from do-it-yourself estate planning software. There are some logical reasons why lawyers encourage consumers to stay away from DIY: (1) You may need someone to counsel you through intimate decisions; (2) A lawyer can give you tax and long term care advice; (3) An estate attorney can guide you through probate and nonprobate assets in your state; and (4) A lawyer can help you through Special Needs Planning or unique family circumstances.
All of the above is accurate, but what slightly taints this advice is that lawyers have a financial interest in you staying away from DIY estate planning. If you avoid DIY, you'll pay a lawyer.
While some simple estate issues may be able to handled through DIY, important considerations may be missed by using DIY. Sure, a goofball lawyer could miss things too, but an experienced, excellent listening, speaks in layman's terms, has your best interests in mind attorney is typically worth the effort.
