Tesla Battery Day, which is roughly scheduled for the third week of May will have an electrifying reveal announcing new "million-mile" battery that can slash the cost of Tesla cars. Here is how it will do that.

Reuters reports the new "million-mile' battery at the center of Tesla's strategy was jointly developed with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) and deploys technology developed by Tesla in collaboration with a team of academic battery experts recruited by Musk, three people familiar with the effort said.

CATL confirmed an electric battery supply deal with Tesla earlier this year and is believed to be part of the next-gen battery development.

The cost of CATL's cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate battery packs has fallen below $80 per kilowatt-hour, with the cost of the battery cells dropping below $60/kWh, the sources said. CATL’s low-cobalt NMC battery packs are close to $100/kWh.

The last word from Tesla was that the Battery Day event would be in late May.
