The electric car batteries that Tesla wants to produce in Grünheide are said to outshine all previous car batteries and we will know more about the details at the Tesla Battery Day in September. There is a "completely new technology" behind the power storage, said Minister of Economics Jörg Steinbach (SPD) on Monday. The new batteries are smaller and, thanks to their higher energy density, allow for greater range, the minister said.

Tesla plans to provide details of its battery in the US at the end of September during the Battery day.

On Friday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Twitter that the company wanted to build not only its Model 3 and Model Y, but also electric car batteries on its 300-hectare site in Grünheide. Minister Steinbach now revealed further details about Tesla's plans. According to this, battery production should become part of the second stage of expansion of the factory. This means that it is not part of the factory plans that are currently available to the public and that the State Environment Agency is already reviewing for approval. Tesla has to submit new approval documents for the apparently planned expansion of the factory. According to Steinbach, whether a second application for pollution control is necessary depends on the pollutants used in battery production.

The minister did not know when the battery production in Grünheide could start. He also kept a low profile on the question of how many jobs could be created in the production of electricity storage.

But despite all optimism, the SPD politician also spoke of hurdles in the planned factory expansion beyond the size currently requested. "In phase two, water with or without battery production is a challenge," said the minister. We can no longer look locally but have to look far further away. "This should mean a plan of the regional water association Strausberg Erkner (WSE), about which the RBB had already reported in January 2020: Accordingly, water should be used for the later stages of expansion Factory to be pumped via a 60-kilometer pipeline from groundwater reservoirs near Pohlitz (Oder-Spree), south of Frankfurt (Oder), to Freienbrink to the Tesla site.

Steinbach continued: "There are already talks with the Ministry of the Environment and the water associations, through which the State Chancellery mediates." Overall, he was optimistic that the expansion stages of the factory could also be supplied with water.

In the meantime, wait for the Tesla Battery Day to learn more about Tesla's completely new and smaller batteries, which Tesla plans to build at the Giga Berlin.
