In this video we will learn the names of some common sports in French. Of course, there are many sports which aren't listed here, so if you would like to know the name of a sport which is not in this list, please feel free to ask in a comment.

I won't translate all these names as they should be pretty clear.
I will just comment on "l'escrime" and "l'équitation", which are both feminine words. "Le sport" is a masculine noun. "Le football" in French refers to what people call "soccer" in North America and it's often shortened as "le foot". Similarly, we often use "le basket", "le hand", "le volley", to talk about "le basketball", "le handball" and "le volley-ball". You can write "le basket-ball" or le "basketball" in French, but really people mostly call it "le basket". However, this rule wouldn't apply to "le baseball", which is a fairly rare sport in France.

There is another sport which is usually shortened: "le hockey sur glace". Hockey is a fairly rare sport in France, so when people think about it they mostly picture our beloved Canadian cousins, so they instantly think "ice hockey". Most French people probably wouldn't even know that there's a version of hockey which isn't played on ice. ;-)

Sports-related words are often used with verbs to talk about what you may like or dislike, so here are a few examples:

- J'aime le sport.
- Je n'aime pas la course.
- J'adore la natation.
- Je déteste le foot.

So, which sports do you like? Are the names of sports in French similar to the names of sports in your own language? What are the most popular sports in your country?
