HOW TO MAKE A ONE-STRAW LEI
My hula class had a One-Straw Lei Workshop on Friday, April 6, 2012. Cynthia demonstrates and teaches the class. (To learn how to make a 2-Straw Lei, please visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWQnJR9m0MA )
Eyelash Yarn: http://www.lionbrand.com/yarns/funFur.htm
Supplies Needed For a One-Straw Lei:
1 skein Nani yarn - choice of color
3 yds - 3/8" Grosgrain ribbon - choice of color
2 Kukui nuts (optional)
18" floral wire - thin
Scissors
Tape
Drinking Straw (a chubby straw works the best)
Fold floral wire in half and insert into straw, pushing out beyond straw. At looped end of straw, insert ribbon and pull wire with ribbon through straw. Tape ribbon securely to straw. Tie yarn to straw. Wrap yarn around straw. Push down yarn onto straw as the straw gets full, making sure to leave some of the weaved yarn on straw. Use whole skein to finish lei. When yarn is used, push down all yarn onto ribbon. Tie end. String kukui nut on both ends of lei and tie. Tie both ends of ribbon together to form a bow.
You can buy kukui nuts (in lei form, then separate the nuts) here, which is reasonably priced:
