2019 RSHYR Tasmanian Yacht WINDROSE Ashok Mani
Yacht Name Windrose S&S 48
Sail Number 660
Owner Ashok Mani
Skipper Sam McCracken
Navigator Richard Grimes (29)
Crew L Denver, L Ratcliff (1), N Antrum, N McCracken, P Masters, S van Rijt, T Vincent, T Ratcliff
Built for Jakob Isbrandtsen in 1959 for the explicit purpose of winning the Admiral's Cup, Windrose accomplished that mission two years later under the burgee of the New York Yacht Club - the first time the Admiral’s Cup was won by the Americans. The current owner of Windrose, Ashok Mani, noticed the beautiful Sparkman & Stephens lines of the rotting timber hull on a mooring in Langkawi five years ago and had the boat hauled out before the ocean swallowed it for good. He spent two years refurbishing and bringing the classic back to near-original, including replacing 80% of the planks and frame due to their poor state.
The boat has never raced south of the equator but will compete for Tasmania under the Tamar Yacht Club burgee given Mani’s family run a vineyard just out of Launceston, where he studied to become a Master Mariner. Nineteen-year-old Sam McCracken will skipper Windrose south with a mixed crew.
