These are my top 5 favorite perennials for the Summer Garden.
5) Pennisetum Princess Caroline A perennial that is grown for foliage interest. This plant is hardy to zone 8 to 10 which is why this plant is low on the list. Princess Caroline is a great plant to use in a jungle or desert garden because it is very drought tolerant.
4) Salvia Gauranitical 'Black and Blue This perennial is grown for its beautiful blue flower. The hummingbirds really do love this flower. If you are hummingbird lover put one of these in your garden.
3) Caryopteris 'Snow Fairy' A perennial that has a magical look to it. It is a true fairy of the garden plants. Deer resistant, pollinator attractor and has wonderful variegated foliage. It should be my #1 plant.
2) Kalimeris Hortsensis A tough white daisy that will grow about anywhere. This plant is just as drought tolerant as Princess Caroline but has lovely star flowers.
1) Heliopsis false sunflower I love the color yellow so maybe I am biased to it. But really what made it a winner is how long the flowers last. The flowers bloom in may and continue onwards till September. That's FIVE MONTHS OF BLOOM! WOW. Also, it is a native to the United States. So if you want a native plant that's a workhorse in the garden, with little to no care and is cold hardy to zone 3. Then check out Heliopsis False Sunflower.

These are my favorite perennials in my garden. All of these plants have proven themselves in my heat and humid summer. They provide repeat color and vigor.
