Kids Art Project - Clay Elephant
This is a video I created demonstrating how to make an elephant by building off of a pinch pot. First students make a pinch pot. Next they take four chunks out of the walls of the pot. The four remaining pieces can become the legs. After smoothing out the form of the body/legs, students move on to making the head. We roll the clay into balls and coils to make the various parts. After attaching everything, we focus on the texture smoothing over cracks and pressing tools into the clay to make designs. These basic techniques could be used to make a pinch pot into a wide variety of animals. I encourage kids to keep it relatively simple and cartoonish as well as consider posing different features at angles to create a sense of movement in the figure.
