How to Make a Swedish Fire Torch
We head to Colorado to meet the duo behind Boyte Creative and turn an ordinary log into a camp stove, also known as a "Swedish Fire Torch," or "Schwedenfeuer" depending on where you live. The torch is unique campfire technique because it uses just a single log as fuel that, when prepared properly, can sustain heat for 2-4 hours. The method is nearly 400 years old, developed in 1618 by Swedish soldiers during the Thirty Years' War. Firewood was apparently sparse across the Roman Empire, so the fuelwood they came upon needed to be carefully spent. The fire torch proved an effective way to conserve wood but still meet their needs for cooking and light.
