Lantana Furniture making by tribal community Siruvani Hills, Coimbatore
During this project on Empowerment of tribal community to generate sustainable livelihood options and forest conservation in Siruvani Hills, Coimbatore (Developing a Rural Women technology-park) funded by DST, sustainable livelihood options are being generated by transferring the technology in furniture and craft making using Lantana, and by capacity building of tribal community in marketing of the finished products.
Lantana camara, an exotic weed of South American origin is invading different forest areas in Western Ghats and posing serious threat to biodiversity of native vegetation in different forest areas. There is pressing need to control the invasion of this exotic woody weed.
In this project tribal community is involved in mechanical control of Lantana by manually cutting and uprooting and at the same time Lantana wood is utilized to develop sustainable livelihood options for the community. Tribal community is being trained in making value added products such as low cost furniture, handicraft, toys and other utility articles using Lantana wood. Furniture looks exactly like cane and bamboo furniture. Thus generation of sustainable livelihood options for Tribals and Forest conservation is achieved at the same time
