An Apple Mini DVI to DVI adapter will be needed to get a second monitor display up and running to either run your old Macbook in stretch or mirror mode for your OSX desktop. These cables are much cheaper now that the newest line of Macbook Pro and Air laptops are using the mini displayport connector for interfacing with external monitors via DVI, VGA, HDMI and composite video cables. If you have a legacy connection on your Apple laptop, this is the cable you'll be needing to get video out to your second monitor for the extra space and screen real estate. Having a dual display is very helpful for those that use editing software like Final Cut or music like Logic or Pro Tools. Also, for the heavy multi-taskers, having a browser open in one screen while working on a spreadsheet or presentation on the other is helpful as well.

For older Macbook and Macbook Pros, you'll run into the problem of needing an extra connector to attach another computer monitor. On the even older models, you could connect with a DVi cable directly, but to save space, Apple has made different sizes of adapters and connectors to make this possible in the most design efficient way possible. The Apple Mini DVI to DVi adapter cable show in the video here was one derivation that is still in use by many Macbook users who haven't yet upgraded to the newest line of Mac laptops in the Pro and Air models.
