Making a Dog Bed out of an OLD Couch - Upcycle Furniture
In this video, I am taking an old family couch, and turning it into something much more useful... a large dog bed!
My dogs love this thing, and the memory foam mattress I bought for it. The mattress is a Brindle Soft Shredded Memory Foam mattress that I purchased from Amazon (link below).
This will hopefully inspire some of you all to think twice before throwing away your furniture and filling up those landfills. I did end up throwing out about half this couch, but still, I did what I could.
To start, I cut the center base out of the couch and scrapped the rest. The arm rest were really old fashioned and not my style, but the center base part could easily be turned into something modern.
Once I had the center piece taken out, I just needed to frame up the sides to create a solid border and add legs. The sides were made from screwing a 1x3 board to each side, and the legs were made with 2 2x2s for each corner.
I then began to sand the entire piece to help remove any old gunk and to have a fresh layer of material for my paint to stick to. A helpful trick when sanding sharp corners is to wrap a piece of sandpaper around a small piece of wood. This edge of wood will help put the sandpaper into small creases and corners.
The last real step was to paint this piece. I taped off all the metal parts and then painted the entire thing white.
Once it was all set, I just needed to get a dog bed to place on top of it.
This became a huge problem. Since I built the bed without looking at dog bed mattress sizes, I had to search and search for a bed with the exact dimensions of my custom bed. I eventually found one on Amazon and it was actually a perfect fit and made of material that I wish I had on my own bed.
The puppies are so spoiled...
