This video describes how Howard Stern transformed his personal life by giving up brutal honesty and moving toward compassion, love, and kindness.

One theme I keep returning to on the blog (https://howcommunicationworks.com) and here on YouTube is whether we should say exactly what we're thinking or whether we should make some effort to filter or modify or design what we say in order to accommodate the feelings of other people.

Should we be brutally honest or considerate and polite?

There are benefits to both approaches.

Being honest seems more authentic and sincere. We can impress people with our bold provocations.

Being polite seems kind. We can show people we care by protecting their feelings.

I recently saw a discussion of this issue from the least likely source: Howard Stern.

For those of you who don't know, Howard Stern is the world's highest paid radio personality. Sirius XM radio pays him $90 million per year!

He was the first "shock jock," the first person to go on the radio and say whatever came to mind.

According to his recent interview with David Letterman (on Netflix), this brutal honesty made for great radio, but it ruined his personal life.

Years of reflection and therapy led him to conclude that kindness and consideration were the only way to escape the madness.

I made a video commenting on Howard's remarks about honesty and madness. If you watch it you will:

-- Avoid the personal destruction that comes with the habit of brutal honesty.
-- Learn how to improve your relationships by adopting a habit of compassion and humility.

Again, I didn't think I'd learn these deep life lessons from Howard Stern, but I did.
