Van Life in Iceland - Awesome Sprinter Camper Van Tour
In this video we take a tour of the Sprinter conversion camper van we got to live and travel in during our trip to Iceland this summer. KuKu Campers was generous enough to lend us the van so that we could film a couple of Exploring Alternatives videos, including a traditional turf house at the Islenski Baerinn Turf House museum, and a tour of the Solheimar eco village.
The van is a Sprinter-style van, but it's actually a Renault Master that has been converted into a camper van. We loved the fact that we could stand up in it, that we had running water and a heater*, and a comfortable hangout space with a desk/table that easily converted into a bed at night. There's also a loft up top so that extra people can sleep up there but we used it to store our clothes and sleeping bags during the day since we found it a bit tight up there.
*CORRECTION: in the video we said the heater was powered by the house battery, but it's only the heater fan that runs from the battery. The heater is actually connected to the fuel tank and runs on diesel. Apologies for the misinformation!
We've dreamed of having a van like this for a long time and after getting the chance to try it, we're more convinced than ever that a high top cargo van like this makes for a great tiny house on wheels.
On top of filming a couple of really neat videos (that we're excited to share with you soon!), we had a great time exploring Iceland's incredibly unique landscapes. We saw glaciers and black sand beaches, volcanoes and waterfalls, bubbling mud pools and steaming hills, turf houses and lots and lots of sheep.
We've been to Iceland once before for an artist residency at Listhus in Olafsfjordur in 2014, but this time we only had a week because we did the Icelandair 7-day stopover. Still, we had a great trip and can't wait to go back one day.
If you're planning to visit Iceland, I'd say that renting a campervan and living the van life is the way to go. You get to see so much more of the country and travel on your own time. Plus you save money by cooking most of your own meals.
Here are some links if you're interested in visiting Iceland. Full disclosure: we are not being paid for this video, or to mention any of these companies but KuKu Campers did lend us this van in exchange for a video, which we were clearly happy to do after our awesome week travelling in it!
