Leopard can live in almost any type of habitat, including rainforests, deserts, woodlands, grassland savannas, forests, mountain habitats, coastal scrubs, shrub lands and swampy areas.
The leopard depends mainly on its acute senses of hearing and vision for hunting. Leopard primarily hunts at night in most areas. In western African forests and Tsavo National Park, leopards have been also observed hunting by day. Leopards usually hunt on the ground. In the Serengeti, leopards have been observed to ambush prey by jumping down on it from trees. Leopards are strong swimmers and very much at home in the water, where they sometimes hunt fish or crabs. The leopard is the most successful of all the big cats. Leopard very comfortable climbing trees. The leopard is so strong it can haul the largest animal its killed into a tree to keep it away from scavengers. the leopard is one of the most widespread of the big cats. Leopards slink close to the ground when stalking their prey. Leopards don’t hunt during the day like cheetah do, they rather hunt at night. Leopard have a large number of light-sensitive cells in their eyes that detect less colour but allow the leopards to detect movement and shape easily in the dark. The large pupil of the leopard’s eyes allows abundant light to enter, making it possible to see at night when they hunt for their prey. Leopards prefer to ambush their prey from a shorter distance. Leopard pounce on their prey, taking it completely by surprise. Leopards are opportunistic hunters and one of the five big cats of the world and have adapt to various habitats in the world including rainforest to dry land.
Leopards hunt alone and mainly at night, relying on stealth despite being able to reach speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour. The leopard stalks its prey silently and at the last minute pounces on its prey and strangles its throat with a quick bite. Leopards are capable of carrying animals up to three times their own weight into the trees. Contrary to popular belief however, leopards do not always store their food in trees. Many, if not most, hunt are dragged and hidden in dense vegetation. Because of their wide range, leopards face competition with a variety of other predators, notably lions, tigers, hyenas, and various species of wild dogs. Leopards avoid direct competition by hunting at different times of the day and avoiding areas frequented by them. Also, in areas with large numbers of large predators, leopard typically store their hunt out of reach in trees. The leopard is the smallest of the four Big Cats, but is probably the most powerful pound-for-pound. Leopard have amazingly strong necks and shoulders, and are able to carry prey often heavier than themselves, high up into the branches of trees where other predators can't reach. The leopard's climbing ability sets it apart from the other big cats and has made it the most successful of the group as far as its numbers in the wild.
