Seed Raising | Growing Fruit and Vegies | Gardening Australia
Sowing and raising your own seeds is a cheap and satisfying way of getting your garden brimming with crops. Once you've mastered it, you'll have fresh produce at your fingertips year-round.
HOW TO … GROW PLANTS FROM SEED
0:01 - CHOOSE YOUR SEEDLING MIX
Start off with a good quality seedling mix - one that holds moisture but drains freely and has good air flow.
0:24 - CHOOSE YOUR CONTAINER
If you are using anything that's recycled, just give it a good wash because weed seeds can collect in the corners. Jane favours compressed peat pots.
1:04 - FILL THE CONTAINER
Scoop the container into the seedling mix, give it a tap to settle and then level off the top.
1:34 - ADD SEEDS
The general rule of thumb is to bury the seed to twice its size - bigger seeds go deeper than smaller ones. Ensure they have full contact with the seedling mix.
1:57 - MULCH
Jane favours vermiculite, a super-heated expanded clay that lets the light through and also helps keep the seeds from drying out while they germinate.
3:49 - KEEP WARM AND MOIST
A home-made mini greenhouse can help.
4:17 - THINNING AND PRICKING OUT
Within a couple of weeks, they will have sprouted. Once the first set of true leaves appear you can thin out to the strongest plant and/or prick out the seedlings to larger pots.
