The French have always considered eating as one of the great delights of their existence, enjoyment of which is to be prolonged and shared. Unlike the French, who welcome a reasonable interval between courses for digestion, relaxation and conversation, the only thing the English can seem to do when they have an empty plate is to cast incriminating looks at your clock.
