Drinks from the Spanish Flu | How to Drink
Let's look at the drinks that were popular way back in 1918! This seemed relevant only last week when I shot it! Bail Fund: https://bit.ly/3dwyRiU NAACP LDF: https://bit.ly/2AAGlTs
In 1918 the Spanish Flu is ripping across the planet and folks are in fact wearing masks, practicing social distancing, having school outdoors, and being pissed about it, and also yes, having the occasional drink. This episode is all about the drinks that would have been popular while that was all going on. Is it exhaustive? Nope. In fact, the Caipirhinia should have been on this list, but my research uncovered enough that I had to spin it off into it's entire own episode, stay tuned for that one next week.
Grasshopper
This drink was most likely invented at Tujague's in New Orleans sometime in or just before 1918. Originally a simple affair of equal parts Creme de Menthe, Heavy Cream, and Creme de Cacao it has in the intervening years gone on to become a far more indulgent affair, often involving ice cream. I think I'll be covering its evolution and variations in another episode, for now, let's just look at the original.
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Heavy Cream
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Creme de Menthe
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Creme de Cacao
Shake over ice, strain
garnish with grated nutmeg
White Lady
Next up is the White lady, but not that White Lady. The name of this drink may call to mind a Harry MacElhone cocktail involving gin and egg white. Instead this is the earlier Harry MacElhone (I know...) cocktail involving equal parts lemon, creme de menthe and curaçao
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Lemon Juice
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Creme De Menthe
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Curaçao or Triple Sec
Shake & Strain
Negroni
The Negroni was invented in 1918 and caught on like wildfire, so it strikes me as belonging on the list. It's also a drink I've made previously, and I stand by that recipe. It is after all the standard.
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Campari
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Sweet Vermouth
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. London Dry Gin
stir over ice
garnish with orange twist
Singapore Sling
Now, Raffles claims to have invented the Singapore Sling at it's Long Bar right now this time, but according to David Wondrich, it was probably already popular for years beforehand as the "Pink Sling". Whatever the case, it was certainly popular in 1918 and is closely associated to this time period. I've made it on the show previously but I've updated my recipe since then.
.5 oz. -or- 15 ml. Lemon Juice
.5 oz. -or- 15 ml. pineapple juice
.5 oz. -or- 15 ml. Cherry Heering
.25 oz. -or- 8 ml. Benedictine
2 oz. -or- 60 ml. London Dry Gin
Shake it, strain it
top with club soda
Ward Eight (and a Half)
Supposedly this drink was invented at the end of the 1800's but by 1918 it would have had time to catch on. It's also not very good. I made it previously on the show and instantly had to remake it because I found it awful. My "fixed" version is presented here, it's very very close to the original, just better. I call it a Ward Eight and a Half
.5 oz. -or- 15 ml. Grenadine
.5 oz. -or- 15 ml. Lemon Juice
.25 oz. -or- 8 ml. Blood Orange Juice
2 oz. -or- 60 ml. Rye
one egg white
dry shake
shake & strain
Garnish with Bitters Dots
Slowly but surely, I'm starting a mailing list so that I'm not fully dependent on YT's algorithmized notifications system. If you'll sign up, I promise not to abuse your generosity, or sell your info to anyone. It's over on the blog right here:
