How to Plant Garlic in the Fall With Organic Gardening in North Carolina
How to plant garlic in the fall. The best time to plant garlic is in the fall. Garlic will start to develop roots in the fall and through the winter in my climate. Then, in the spring, it is ready to grow. In this video, I will prepare a small bed to plant three cloves from what I harvested last year. I've learned that garlic should not be planted too close to each other because it doesn't like its roots to be crowded.
I put a good amount of worm castings on the bed and also dug in some omri listed organic fertilizer. then, I covered the bed with wood chips for a mulch.
I won't have to do anything to them till next June when it will be time to harvest them. you can tell when they are ready to harvest when the lower leaves turn brown and start to dry up.
The garlic I planted is a hard neck variety. Hard neck varieties are generally smaller and have a stronger flavor. they are also recommended for warmer climates.
