What is a Class B Plus camper van and how is it different from a Class B or Class C?

** More about this video **

Everyone knows what a class C motorhome looks like right? It's the one with the bed overhang above the cab of a truck. Some years back, RV manufacturers began removing that bed over the cab and in an effort to differentiate their new motorhomes from the pack began calling them "B Plusses".

The reality is that there is no class B plus - at least not according to your local DMV and not according to the departments of transportation for the governments of the United States and Canada. If you go to register your class b plus with your local DMV what you'll find is that they register it as a class c, which is exactly what it is.

There are only 3 classes of motorhomes. A class A motorhome is generally built on a strong, heavy duty commercial bus or truck platform. These are the huge motorhomes, generally with slide outs (although that's not a distinguishing factor); sometimes with a dual axel in the rear (that's not a distinguishing factor either) and usually longer than say 30 feet (they can be shorter). They generally have huge 22 inch wheels to support all the weight (although that too is not a distinguishing factor). You know a class A motorhome when you see it.

A class B motorhome is built on an empty van chassis. The distinguishing factor for a class B is that there is no build out of an exterior shell by the rv coach manufacturer.

A class C motorhome is built on a light to medium duty truck chassis. That means there may be a built out cab (there doesn't have to be) but nothing behind the cab except the flat bed of a truck. The rv manufacturer has to build a shell for the coach part and then attach it to the bed or frame of the truck. The classification doesn't require that the coach manufacturer place a bed above the cab. The distinguishing factor of a class C is that the shell is built separately by the rv manufacturer and attached separately to the truck chassis - berth above the cab or not.

Most "B Plus" motorhomes are actually Class C motorhomes because the coach is built on a light to medium duty truck platform and the coach shell is attached separately to the truck chassis.

The next time you go to a dealer and hear the dealer describe a motorhome as a class B Plus you'll know what they really mean is that the rv is a Class C but has no berth above the cab.
