5 BIGGEST MISTAKES WHEN WEARING A DRESS WATCH! - DRESSY vs SPORT WATCH DEBATE
https://www.crmjewelers.com – 5 BIGGEST MISTAKES WHEN WEARING A DRESS WATCH! - DRESSY VS SPORT WATCH DEBATE
What's better, a dress watch or a sport watch? Should you go sporty or dressy?
I get the above question all the time from customers, but the answer is that it depends.
Sometimes you're better off going with a particular, sportier watch for a more casual occasion and sometimes your best bet is to go with a very higher end, or more conservative watch for a more formal event. It all depends.
Here are the 5 Biggest Mistakes people make when wearing a dress watch!
Mistake #1) Choosing a formal watch that's too big! In general, for dressier watches, I recommend that you go with a maximum size of 40mm or 41mm (smaller on many occasions).
Mistake #2) Wearing a watch with a metal bracelet. For the most part, it's classier to wear a dress watch on a leather strap, instead of on a steel bracelet. This is a great example even when dealing with a high end watch like Patek Philippe. The all-gold Nautilus 5980 actually looks sportier and more casual than the less expensive leather strap model.
Mistake # 3) Wearing a two-color watch for formal occasions. Don't wear a two-tone watch, like I did with the Rolex Yacht-Master II in a wedding I attended. Stick to one-color metal.
Mistake #4) Using a metal color that doesn't match your outfit. This is a big no-no. Make sure that the metal color of the watch matches with your suit. For example, using a platinum, steel, or white gold dress watch with a gray suit.
Mistake #5) Using a strap color that clashes with your shoes or belt. Make sure that you don't make this mistake. When wearing a dress watch with a leather strap, make sure that the leather color goes with your shoes and belt; e.g., black shoes, belt and strap.
My favorite dress watch brands are typically Patek Philippe, Breguet and Vacheron.
For sports watches, I tend to like Audemar Piguet and Rolex.
To wrap up, I would like to point out that there are exceptions to wearing a sports watch to a formal occasion. When it comes to watches like the stainless steel Rolex Submariner with a classy design, sometimes you can pull this off.
