New Possibilities of the Lingnan Landscape — A Nature Writer’s View on Ink Paintings

Can our interpretations of traditional ink paintings evolve? What new observations can be made through travel, hiking, and an ecological awareness? Nature writer and activist Liu Ka-shiang approached these questions from the perspective of the Lingnan region, centering on the Pearl River Delta, proposing new experiences with nature through ink art, and new experiences with ink art through nature.

In the Lingnan area, mountains and seas are interwoven and peppered with islands large and small. Its geographical landscape is similar to that of sub-tropical forests: the vegetation is verdant, bountiful, and complex, its species rich and diverse. A culture of agricultural settlements has remained among the country parks and villages in the New Territories. These factors all contributed to the distinctiveness of the Delta from areas south and north of the Yangzi River (Jiangnan and Jiangbei).

Liu has travelled extensively throughout the Lingnan region and has accumulated in-depth yet expansive knowledge by immersing himself in the wilderness, villages, and traditional markets. In the talk, he compared the natural environment of Lingnan with that of Jiangnan, Fujian, and Taiwan and elaborated on their cultures, flora, and fauna. Drawing from his research and writing on the environment, place, and history, as well as his analysis of ink paintings, Liu offered imaginative ideas on aesthetics and the charm of ink painting.
