Seven months after their first pilot, the Project Owl team returned to Puerto Rico in October 2019 with new technology and refined goals. The Call for Code 2018 Global Challenge winners brought new solar-powered mesh network devices that establish connectivity where there is none to the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez. There, they worked with students to demo their technology and install the devices around campus.

The trial was the latest milestone for Project Owl as IBM helps the team build, test and scale through its Code and Response program – a deployment initiative to put open source technologies developed as part of coding challenges such as Call for Code in the communities where they are needed most.

As Project Owl continues to refine their solution with larger and more successful tests, the team hopes their open source software and devices will soon be deployed around the globe so first responders can respond in any natural disaster situation.
