Cicadas are a loud noisy bug heard worldwide. Particularly noticeable on hot summer afternoons and evenings, the cicada sound is an indelible memory for listeners of the season.
These Australian Cicadas we recorded in the Australian bush. I'm not sure of the species as there are over 200 in this part of the world. Loud at times, and subdued at other times, one of these buggers next to the human ear would be an ear splitting 120 decibels.
Fortunately for humans, the Cicadas spook easily in the presence of humans and are often heard abruptly silencing as hikers pass by. For this recording, I set the recorder and walked away to
avoid spooking them. The sound of the cicada is a cross between noise, buzz and a bit of tonal pitch.
