The writing is on the wall for the internal combustion engine as our towns and cities become more polluted - not just exhaust fumes but also noise pollution. The electric motorbike is the future of personal urban transport in the coming decades.

There is no denying the fact that the current crop of electric motorbikes are relatively pricey, but their running cost is only 10% of other bikes, so the extra cost will gradually be recouped. Maintenance costs are lower because they have less moving parts - no clutch, no gearbox, no exhaust pipe. Currently they have limitations in range, but the technology continues to evolve, and within a few years as batteries become lighter and more powerful they will match their petrol-driven cousins.

When it comes to performance electric motorbikes are already ahead, with amazing acceleration and impressive top speeds. There are no gears, so the power is delivered in a smooth curve, and the engine braking is equally powerful. Add to that the fact that there is no noise, no oil, no mess, and they are transforming biking as we know it.
