This will demonstrate how to format a hard disk to be completely Mac OS X compatible, the entire process is handled through Disk Utility as demonstrated with an external hard drive attached to a Mac running OS X El Capitan.

This gives the hard drive a Mac compatible HFS partition, it works with internal and external hard drives, USB drives, flash drives, USB keys, and any other storage type.
